In 1909, two young pioneers, partnered to create the first moving establishment in the Imperial Valley. With a horse and a flatbed trailer, Pioneer Truck & Transfer began operation in El Centro, CA. Pioneer Truck & Transfer was in operation before phone lines were introduced. Once phone lines were installed, Pioneer's phone numbers were #1 and #2.

Upon returning from WWII, Percie C. Thacker, Jr., the son of one of the partners, bought out the other partner. Pioneer Truck & Transfer was affiliated with another van line until 1947. In 1947, Pioneer was accepted as an agent for Mayflower Transit, Inc.

Pioneer spent its first 49 years moving others. In 1958 it was time to move themselves. Pioneer relocated to 234 Main Street, an old icehouse from the 1920's. The icehouse was ideal for storing household goods because of the insulation.

Along with a new face came a new name, Pioneer Van & Storage Co.

The Thackers, in 1991, passed the torch to a new owner, E. Frank Popejoy, Jr. "The Next Generation" is the vision of Pioneer Van & Storage. To support this vision, growth and change have been integrated into their daily dealings. The staff has grown from a few to almost 30. Equipment has been added or updated. The warehouse area has been revamped and expanded for better utilization, including a 2800 sq. foot sales and reception area to serve walk-in clientele. Change is history in the making. As Pioneer continues to change, Pioneer will continue to make history.
